An Open Letter to Ray Schoenke

posted Sunday, 20 May 2007

Background: Earlier this year, the "American Hunters and Shooters Association" held a press conference, piggybacked on the NRA annual meetings in St. Louis. Since this organization bills itself as "an alternative to the NRA," Ginny Simone, reporter for NRA News, showed up at its press conference, hoping to report on it. As this video clip reveals, Simone was almost thrown out of the place bodily by ex-footballer Ray Schoenke, who is listed as president of the association.

 Dear Mr. Schoenke:

Did you feel like a Real Man, a genuine hero, when you assaulted Ginny Simone in the hallway of the hotel where AHSA held its press conference? I watched the videotape, as well as listening to the comments of Dave Workman, who witnessed the event.

You looked to me like a man who was so frightened that he was about to lose control. It is a testament to Ms. Simone's self-confidence and courage that she did not appear to shrink away as you threateningly approached and grabbed her. You should be glad that I am not Ms. Simone's father, husband or "significant other," because if I were, I would have confronted you personally about this attack, and would have demanded that you be arrested and charged criminally.

On re-watching the video, I noticed that your cohort Robert Ricker was attempting to pull you away from Simone, apparently also fearing that you'd injure her.

I won't even go into the matter of how you lied on-camera, alleging that the NRA was trying to have your organization tossed out of the hotel, or the way AHSA's web site borrows language so freely from the Brady Campaign. You were frightened out of your wits that something about AHSA might have been revealed. And you acted like a spoiled high school jock.

Shame, shame shame.

Stan Modjesky

Hey Stan. Look up the defination of the word assult. 1. A violent physical or verbal attack. 2. a. A military attack, such as one launched against a fortified area or place. b. The concluding stage of an attack in which close combat occurs with the enemy. 3. Law a. An unlawful threat or attempt to do bodily injury to another. b. The act or an instance of unlawfully threatening or attempting to injure another. 4. a. Law Sexual assault. b. The crime of rape. I didn't see any of that in the video. Get a LIFE pal.

Dear Mr. Balls. Judging from your puerile nom de plume and sloppy spelling, it would be difficult for me to put much stock in your opinion.

The criminal and tort offenses of assault do not require that the assailant touch his victim, much less cause bodily harm.

If you wipe the spittle off your monitor and look again at the video, you will see that Simone carefully stood in the same spot, while Schoenke moved aggressively towards her several times, once grabbing her by both arms. At one point she attempts to step back, and he closes the space between them. At another point, one of his henchmen attempts to pull him away, and Schoenke brushes off the guy.

Assault and self-defense against it take into account the perception of the person on the receiving end of the abuse. Considering the disparity in size between Schoenke and Simone, it would not have been unreasonable for her to feel she was being menaced.

Regarding my lack-of-a-life, what have you been doing the past seven months, that it took you until today to read this entry and comment? Or are you perhaps a flack for the AHSA, methodically working your way through every online reference to the event?

Oh, and by the way, I don't think you and I will ever become "pals."
