WOODSIDE, Del. -- State fire officials say a Woodside-area man was seriously burned last night in an explosion after he poured gunpowder into a charcoal grill and ignited it.
Michael Chionchio of the state Fire Marshal's Office says the 50-year-old man suffered first-degree burns to his face and third-degree burns to the hand he used to light the black powder.
The man, whose name is not being released pending an investigation, was taken to the Kent General Hospital, where he is being treated.
Chionchio says the man was alone in the back yard of a home in the 100 block of Graves Lane in the Meadowbrook Acres Trailer Park when he lit the gunpowder. The fire went out on its own and there was no fire damage.
Chionchio says the man could face charges including reckless endangerment and reckless exploding.
Investigators believe alcohol played a part in the incident. [emphasis added]
What a complete dumbass. Black powder EXPLODES when it's lit. That's why they make FUSES.
Meanwhile, I would like to see chapter and verse of the Delaware law that prohibits "Reckless exploding." It sounds to me as if alcohol may have played a part in the wording of the press release...
