Bill Clinton's lame excuses for his pardons

posted Friday, 6 July 2007

Just after President Bush announced that he would commute the jail sentence of Lewis Scooter Libby, the New York Times saw fit to publish a screed from former President Clinton, entitled My Reasons for the Pardons.

After a lengthy exordium on the Constitutional basis of the executive power to grant various forms of clemency, Clinton goes on to explain why his pardons of Marc Rich and Pincus Green actually do pass the "sniff test," even though so many Americans think otherwise.

A genius at the lie-of-omission, Clinton managed to dodge altogether the more intriguing matters of his having pardoned Henry Cisneros and Susan MacDougal. Since MacDougal was involved with Senator Rodham-Clinton's questionable activities at the bar in Arkansas, and since the Senator is now hoping to ascend to the Presidency, an in-depth discussion of that particular pardon would be far more relevant.

America, do you prefer your Red Herring broiled, blackened, or battered and fried?
