Cindy on thin ice

Cindy Sheehan has managed what heretofore would have seemed impossible: she has become a "useful idiot" to both sides in the war on terror.

There is no need to recount yet again her political love affair with the likes of Jesse Jackson and Hugo Chavez.

Now, Sheehan has become a "useful idiot" to the country's warhawks. Just weeks after purchasing (through a straw-man buyer) a tract of land near the Bush vacation home in Texas, Sheehan announces that she will offer asylum to military deserters from the US armed forces.

Now, I have a bit of direct experience in this realm, having been an anti-Vietnam-War loudmouth, and through acquaintances with some actual deserters. I can tell you that to a person, none would be stupid enough to go over the hill and seek sanctuary in a place that was: (a) publicly announced to be a haven for deserters, and (b) subject to the laws of the US.

So, if Cindy wants to round up some of the more, um, mentally challenged military deserters, I say let her go to it. Anybody dumb enough to desert to Camp Gold Star, or whatever they are calling it, is probably best relieved of military duty, being a danger to those around him.

For what it's worth, regarding the comparison between the Iraq and the Vietnam wars, no comparison exists. Vietnam was fought by an army of conscripts, while Iraq is being fought by an army of volunteers. You volunteer without knowing what you are signing up for, worst-case, you're a dumbass. Plain and simple.
