Mel Gibson berserk

posted Sunday, 30 July 2006

Where is the outrage from all the Hollyweird leftoids over Mel Gibson's nasty anti-semitic tirade whilst being arrested for DUI?

At the very least, I'd expect an angry statement from La Streisand, and other politically-vocal Jews in Hollywood. But apparently something thicker than either water or blood prevents it.

Some bloggers have made explanatory remarks along the lines of these, from Macsmind:

They say when you’re drunk you say the things you really mean. I don’t know. Back in my firewater days I said a lot of things I know I didn’t mean - sometimes I still do.

I disagree.

Alcohol does not make you do things that are not in your character. It is a dis-inhibitor.

With the possible exception of Jimmy Carter, we all have deep, dark, ugly impulses. Our character is measured by the degree to which we control these.

For example, person might recognize the right of everyone in the USA to equal and fair treatment, regardless of ethnicity, but still feel that blacks, or Middle Easterners are repugnant, at some visceral level. People sometimes find gay sex to be physically repulsive, but manage to love their gay relatives and neighbors, nonetheless. The degree to which this person treats those others fairly, and swallows down his prejudice seems more important than whether he feels it.

I believe that if you know that you're an ugly drunk, you have the obligation to stay the hell out of public when you're drinking, else you run the risk of making a fool of yourself by showing things you'd otherwise be ashamed to show.

So, is he any nastier in his heart-of-hearts than most of us? Hard to tell, and I would prefer not to know.

But it is interesting, how silent Hollywood and NYC have been over Gibson's--shall we call it a gaffe?--since they exhibit zero-tolerance for lesser gaffes by, say Republican office holders, clergymen, and the general public.

Given the current events swirling around Israel and Jews everywhere, I think more than an oral act of contrition from Gibson is warranted.
