Is Gibson's apology sincere?

Uh, Mel: there's something vaguely familiar about that expression.

I knew I'd seen it before.

Neither exactly look contrite to my eye.

 And by the way, Mel, when you're apologizing, stand up like a man.  The rubes are more likely to believe it, if they are not looking at the sole of your shoe.
