Jackass Michael Bloomberg

posted Thursday, 6 July 2006
Quoting from the Associated Press:

The economy of the country's largest city and the entire nation would collapse if illegal immigrants were deported en masse, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told a Senate committee hearing Wednesday.

New York City is home to more than 3 million immigrants, and a half-million of them came to this country illegally, Bloomberg testified.

"Although they broke the law by illegally crossing our borders ... our city's economy would be a shell of itself had they not, and it would collapse if they were deported," he said. "The same holds true for the nation."

Why hasn't anyone asked Bloomie for clarification. Such as:

  • Where  did he get his count of half a million illegals? Does he know something nobody else does, or did he just pull a number out of thin air?
  • What, exactly, do illegal immigrants do that legal ones do not, that bolsters "the economy?"
  • How would removing any randomly-chosen half-million people from NYC even be noticeable? You could assemble a cross section of everyone from illegal Pedro or Khalid to the president of the DAR and send them on permanent vacation, and who could tell?

Like most New Yorkers, Bloomie suffers from the delusion that NYC is the center of the universe.

Meanwhile, whatever happened to news reporters who were willing to question a politician's flat assertions, much less assertions as irrational as these particular ones?
