Let's Attack Ehrlich in any Way Possible

posted Tuesday, 25 July 2006

...even if it makes us look like fools. Democrat Party hack James Kehl drops another load in today's Jeffersonian.

I want to express my personal admiration for Kristen Cox, the secretary of the Department of Disabilities, in overcoming her own disability, blindness, and achieving the Republican nomination.

Translation: "She doesn't sweat much, for a fat girl."

Secretary Cox has served on various advisory councils and, among other things, has been an assistant director of governmental affairs for the National Federation for the Blind. She has never been a candidate for elected office. She has dealt with legislators, but has never been responsible for getting legislation passed - a key fact, considering that Gov. Ehrlich has difficulty working with a legislature. The choice of Cox as a running mate does not help him in this area.

Secretary Cox has held supervisory positions, but has not been in charge of an organization as large as the Maryland state government.

Accurate enough, but so what? Blair Lee, the only Lieutenant Governor in Maryland history to have taken over in the absence of the Governor, had no prior experience either. For those who came in late, Lee took office as Marvin Mandel (a Democrat) was prosecuted and jailed. Come to think of it, the only politicians in Maryland to have been jailed have been Democrats.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend never held elected or appointed political office, but was promoted as Lieutenant Governor and as a gubernatorial candidate as though she was the best thing invented since oral sex.

O'Malley's second, Delegate Anthony "Who?" Brown, has been elected to office, but so what? If that in itself were the primary qualification, why would Kehl feel the need to say:

Del. Brown honed his leadership and executive skills through his service in the Army, including a deployment with Operation Iraqi Freedom, and continues to serve our country as a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, with the Judge Advocate General's Corps.

So, Brown's non-elected activities count towards his resume, but Cox's do not. Hypocrite.

POST SCRIPT, 5:35 PM

Of course, it's disingenuous to discuss anyone's qualifications to be Lieutenant-Governor of Maryland, since--other than being "a heartbeat away" from the chief executive--the office HAS no official duties, except as assigned by the governor. Thus, while you might agree that Mike Steele "accomplished virtually nothing" in the office, at least he did no damage, unlike KKT. It's quite possible and entirely legitimate that the governor defined Steele's job as "hang out with me and be a second set of eyes and ears," or "keep an eye on that jackass O'Malley."
