In Memoriam: Thomas Bonsall

 Thomas E. Bonsall

April 1947 - July 15, 2008

Tom + cat
Tom was my most trusted adult male friend, a man I would have chosen as my brother, were we given such choices.
He was my mentor as a writer, editor and photographer; a person who could be depended upon to give an honest opinion on a photograph or article rather than flatter me with what he might have guessed I wanted to hear.
Like all true friends, he was able to poke fun at my foibles without being hurtful; to deflate my ego when it was deserved; to give earnest praise when it was warranted; to find humor in my social and physical clumsiness, and to teach me it was not the end of the world to be a klutz.

Tom was an exceptionally talented person, with a deep wit and a more compassionate feeling for other people than he felt comfortable showing at times. I knew him for more than 40 years, and am sure he retained his outlook across that span. He will be missed.

Mr. Bonsall was a tremendous writer. I own several of his book, his wonderful Studebaker book "Less Than They Promised" being my favorite. My condolences to Mr. Bonsall's partner and family for their loss.

Tom was a lovely, gifted, and extraordinarily talented man. His passing is both a personal loss and a loss to the writing community that he cared about so deeply.
